Wedding at the Swan Shakespeare’s Globe, Bankside London
The day started at the their home for bridal preparation, where I quickly got to work on photographing the details. There was a real international feel to the morning being that the bride is from the Ukraine and groom is from Germany, however the language of photography has no boundary; and I was made to feel just like one of the family too!
After a lovely drive in an open top Bentley, it was off to The Swan which is on the corner of Bankside and New Globe Walk and linked to the Globe Theatre.
Although a modern ceremony, (Would you believe that there was a robot in attendance!) I was introduced to a number of Ukrainian wedding traditions and blessings. The Rushnyk; a ritual cloth or ‘towel’ that the bride and groom step onto and whomever steps first shall be the head of the family. There was also the Korvai, traditional and decorated bread that symbolizes family, community, love, purity, good luck and future prosperity. This was presented to the couple by bride’s father, where the couple broke off a piece of the bread at the same time (I think the size of the piece also symbolised who is in charge too!) and the rest was shared with the family and guests at the reception.
Being great weather we were also able to utilize the great locations around London’s Bankside; including the Globe, Millennium Bridge, along the river Thames and with St Paul’s Cathedral as our backdrop.
Being such literary fans, we also made a quick visit to Tate Modern and managed to grab a few photographs in the Turbine Hall, as well as some cheeky shots actually inside the Tate bookshop all the while being eyed up by the security; we did have permission honest!
Another great day spent with great people!
